Real Leadership for Difficult Times

In late 2008 and 2009 to date, we have experienced a strong recession at the national level. Government at the state and local levels can not help but be affected. The problem is that while the national government can run up deficits (yes John Boehner and Mitch McConnell, the Republican party of George Bush for eight years and a Republican Congress for six years did their fair share of damage to the national debt!), the states and local governments MUST balance their budgets, making cuts if necessary as the fiscal year goes on. In Maryland, we have been making a conscientious effort to offer services to our people within the context of fiscal responsibility. Yes, we HAVE made numerous cuts to our budget over the last year and will need to make more in the months ahead, while maintaining our core responsibilities. What is needed from our state legislature is real leadership in the coming years ahead!
